Kahawatte shooting two more remanded

The Pelmadulla Magistrate yesterday remanded till January 20, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councillor, Nilantha Jayakody and Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Vajira Silva for their alleged involvement in the shooting incident at Kahawatte, where two persons were injured and one person was killed in the early hours of Jan. 05.


 Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the two suspects against whom arrest warrants were issued had surrendered to the court yesterday.


Earlier another suspect, Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara, who is also alleged to have been involved in the shooting incident, was arrested on Jan. 10 and the Magistrate remanded him till January 20.


On the same evening the shooting took place, the Pelmadulla Magistrate ordered officers of Immigration and Emigration department serving at the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake and Mahinda Rajapaksa International Airport at Mattala to prevent Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council member Nilantha Jayakody and Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Vajira Silva from leaving the country and issued arrest warrants on them.


 One of the three victims who sustained gunshot injuries while they were decorating a stage for Common Opposition Presidential Candidate Maithripala Sirisena, succumbed to his injuries at the Ratnapura hospital on Jan. 07, on the eve of the 2015 Presidential Election. He was 57-year-old, Shantha Dodangoda, a resident of Weladuruwatte, Kahawatte.
