President Sirisena appointed SLFP head unanimously

The Central Committee and Executive Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) met at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday and unanimously appointed President Maithripala Sirisena as the new Chairman of the party. The Central Committee also reinstated the party membership of President Maithripala Sirisena and others who had left to support Sirisena’s presidential bid.

The CC and EC met after former President Mahinda Rajapaksa decided to hand over the party leadership to President Sirisena on Thursday.UPFA parliamentary group decision to appoint Badulla District MP Nimal Siripala de Silva as the Opposition Leader and Ratnapura District parliamentarian W. D. J. Seneviratne as the Chief Opposition Whip also was endorsed by the CC and EC.

Former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunga will function as advisers to the party.

Alahapperuma will continue as the General Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

No one, however, was appointed the National Organiser of the party though that position has fallen vacant from Wednesday as former Minister Basil Rajapaksa resigned from the post before going overseas.

Newly elected Opposition leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said that they would support President Maithripala Sirisena’s government’s 100-day programme while being in the opposition.

Asked whether the posts in the UPFA would change, De Silva said the Alliance would meet on Monday and take whatever action. UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha would preside over the Monday’s meeting, he said.

President Maithripala Sirisena, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, MP Namal Rajapaksa, Uva Provincial Councillor Shashindra Rajapaksa and other MPs of SLFP including Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna also participated.

Foreign Journalists asked President Sirisena, while he was leaving the SLFI premises what his position on India was but he left smiling without fielding the query.
