Not at Weeraketiya as earlier planned

Independence Day celebrations on parliament grounds

The 67th National Independence Day Celebrations will be held on Parliament grounds on February 04, Home Affairs and Fisheries Minister Joseph Michael Perera said yesterday.

Addressing media soon after assuming duties at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Colombo, the minister said that this year’s Independence Day had earlier been scheduled to be held at the Weeraketiya Central College, but the venue was changed to cut costs.

"The decision was taken considering the huge cost that would have to be incurred by holding the ceremony at Weeraketiya. This year’s ceremony will be held at a minimum cost," he said.

Minister Perera said the government had also decided to stop the Deyata Kirula exhibition scheduled to be held at Matara for the same reason of wanting to save public funds. The infrastructure development projects that had been initiated under the Deyata Kirula however would be continued as per the original plan, he said.
