Clandestine western help kept Prabhakaran going, alleges ally of MS govt.January 22, 2015, 10:05 pm

Asserting that war wouldn’t have lasted 30 years, if not for clandestine Western support for the LTTE, particularly in the procurement of US weapons by Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MP, has claimed that interrogation of LTTE leader now in the protective custody of the government will help establish the circumstances under which Norway intervened in Sri Lanka.
The JVP has recently requested the Supreme Court to have Pathmanathan arrested.
The intervention by Erik Solheim led to the signing of a ceasefire agreement between the then government and the LTTE in Feb. 2002.
JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was addressing the media at party headquarters at Pelawatte, Battaramulla on Wednesday (Jan.21). Norway stepped-in at the behest of Western powers; therefore a special investigation was required to ascertain the truth.
In his capacity as the JVP leader, MP Dissanayake is a member of the National Executive Council headed by President Maithripala Sirisena, who is also the leader of the largest single party, the SLFP, in Parliament.
Alleging that the Rajapaksas had swept everything under the carpet after having grabbed ships and money from the defeated LTTE, the JVPer called for a thorough investigation into a range of assets held by KP on behalf of the LTTE at the time he was arrested and brought to
Colombo in early August 2009.
Dissanayake credited the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) for what he called the Malaysian feat.
The JVP leader said that three major factors contributed to the separatist war, namely: armaments, international relations and unlimited funds. Kumaran Pathmanathan had been the chief weapons procurer for the LTTE. Pathmanathan had played a role as important as that of LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham, Dissanayake said, adding that they ran a vast international network in support of the terrorist campaign here.
Weapons procured by Kumaran Pathmanathan caused massive death and destruction here, he said. The JVP chief said: "Kumaran Pathmanathan provided funds required for the running of a massive Tiger intelligence network. Pathmanathan became the LTTE leader in the immediate aftermath of Velupillai Prabhakaran’s death because of his spearheading role in the organization."
The Sri Lankan security forces brought the war to a successful conclusion in May 2009.
Dissanayake lambasted the previous government for not producing Pathmanathan in an open court.
Pathmanathan could have been effectively used by the previous government to counter post-war Western threat against the country, he said, alleging that the LTTE had received weapons from Western powers throughout its murderous campaign.
Alleging that the LTTE had procured weapons from legitimate as well as illegal US weapons supply operations, MP Dissanayake said that Pathmanathan could be used to expose the US. The JVP leader said that highlighting US double standards was important not only to Sri Lanka but many other countries as well. Dissanayake accused the US of causing turmoil all over the world, while pretending to be propagating peace.
The MP dismissed accusations that the new government wanted to expose the US at the behest of the Tamil Diaspora. MP Dissanayake claimed that Western countries, particularly the US wanted to guarantee Pathmanathan’s freedom.
