Docs get assurance from Health Minister about schools for their children

Health and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne had assured the admission of doctors’ children to the best schools following annual transfers, Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Assistant Secretary Dr. Navin de Soysa said yesterday.

Dr. Soysa pointed out that the new Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasm had announced that the quota system offered to various categories of high officials to admit their children to suitable schools had been nullified. As a result many doctors were worried about the education of their children following annual transfers.

As the GMOA had earlier been given a quota to admit their children to the best schools, many doctors rushed to the GMOA head office and wanted a clear answer whether their children could be admitted to the best schools following transfers. Since it was a serious issue to the doctors the GMOA met Minister Rajitha Senaratne to discuss the matter at length, he explained.

Dr. Soysa said the GMOA had convinced Minister Senaratne that the quality health care system in the country could not be achieved if the doctors were not treated with due respect. Following the discussion Minister Senaratne promised that he would personally meet Education Minister Kariyawasm to discuss the issue. Minister Senaratne assured that the quota system given to the doctors would not be scrapped.
