Choksy passes away

Eminent lawyer and former Finance Minister K. N. Choksy passed away in Colombo yesterday at the age of 82.


Choksy served as Cabinet Minister of Constitutional and State Affairs from 1993 to 1994 under President D. B. Wijetunga. He was a Member of Parliament from 1989 to 2010 continuously.


Having received his primary education at S. Thomas’ Preparatory School, Kollupitiya, Choksy continued his secondary education at S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia. Having been called to the Bar as an Advocate in 1958, he rapidly established himself in a leading practice in the civil courts in Colombo. Choksy was appointed President’s Counsel in 1981. He appeared as lead-Counsel on one side or the other in many major cases.


During the period 1989 to 1992, he successfully defended the then President Ranasinghe Premadasa, as his Senior Counsel, in a petition filed seeking to annul the 1989 presidential poll.


He entered Parliament in February 1989 as a nominated Member on the UNP National List. He leaves behind his wife and three sons.
