GMOA wants everything in writing about their dues

Otherwise countrywide strike in last week of February

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday giving an ultimatum to the government stressed that unless Health Secretary Dr D. M. R. B. Dissanayaka issued a circular on doctors’ salary increases in accordance with the provisions of the National Wage Policy before February 16, the GMOA would have no alternative but to launch a countrywide strike in the last week of February.

GMOA President Dr Anuruddha Padeniya pointed out that as a result of their long struggle under successive governments the National Wage Policy had come into being. The provisions of the Policy were in a legal document which had been accepted by Parliament.

Dr. Padeniya said no organisation had been vested with powers to act in contravention of the National Wage Policy. The provisions had to be implemented whatever the government was in power. The budget proposals made by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for 2015 must be implemented, the GMOA chief said. On the other hand, the government had a legal obligation to treat all professionals alike.
