Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake yesterday said state employees would receive a pay hike of Rs. 10,000 in keeping with a pledge made by President Maithripala Sirisena. That would be an allowance, he added.

Addressing the media at the Finance Ministry auditorium, Minister Karunanayake said government servants would receive a total of Rs. 10,000 each by June 2015 including Rs. 3,000 granted by the previous government.

The public employees would receive the balance of Rs. 2,000 in June, he said.

Meanwhile Minister Karunanayake challenged former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to declare his assets to the public by tomorrow at a media conference.

Responding to Rajapaksa’s interview given to a local newspaper published yesterday where he asked in which year Karunanayake had purchased the house he currently lived in, the Finance Minister said that he had purchased the land and built the house before he entered politics in 1993.

He said he had declared his assets since 1993.
