Opposition wants to head watchdog committees

by Saman Indrajith

The opposition yesterday requested that some of its MPs be appointed to head parliamentary committees such as Cope and PAC in order to make the work in the legislature more transparent and neutral.

Chief opposition Whip John Amaratunga made the request after the UNP agreed to support the appointment of UPFA MP Chandima Weerakkody to the post of Deputy Speaker.

"It would be better of the opposition members too could be appointed to some positions in parliament," Amaratunga said.

Both COPE and PAC are currently headed by ruling party members.

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said that he would look into the matter and this could be taken up at the party leaders’ meeting.

Raising a point of order, Minister Wimal Weerawansa said that the post of

Opposition leader has been allocated to the UNP forever, thus their was no need to allocate any other posts.
