The Ministry of Plantation Infrastructure Development has taken the initiative to construct 75 houses for Koslanda landslide affected families in the Badulla District.

The landslide occurred on October 29, 2014 rendering 75 families homeless.

Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Infrastructure Development V. Sivagnanasothy said that under the government’s 100-day programme, action had been initiated to construct good houses for the families affected by the landslide disaster.

The programme would focus on decent housing with ownership and have features such as space, light, ventilation, privacy, access to water and sanitation, he said. "Individual houses will be constructed with 550 sq. ft. floor area on a seven perch land for each affected family.

Each house will have two bedrooms, a veranda, a kitchen, and a toilet. Further, the provision of titles will protect the householders from eviction and empower estate community to live in dignity."

A meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Minister of Plantation Infrastructure Development Palani Digambaram on Feb. 20, 2015 to finalise the plan for implementation. The Urban Development Authority (UDA) had designed the plan in close consultation with the Ministry of Plantation Infrastructure Development and other agencies such as Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT), National Building Research Organization (NBRO), Sri Lanka Army, Ministry of Plantation Industries, Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs) and the representatives of the beneficiaries, Sivanansothy  said.

The Secretary observed that per unit cost of each house was estimated at Rs. 1.2 million. In addition, provision has also been made for access roads, water, electricity and other facilities. The ground breaking ceremony, he said had been scheduled for March 1, 2015 at the Poonagala division site in Badulla, at 10 a.m. "We expect to complete this programme within a period of six months under an accelerated initiative."
