New kidney stone removing machine installed

A state-of-the-art lithotripter machine, capable of removing 95 per cent of kidney stones, has been installed at the Colombo National Hospital at a cost of Rs. 50 million. It is able to dissolve kidney stones by means of X-ray.

The sophisticated machine, the latest in the world, is more quicker and safer, Healthcare Minister Maithripala Sirisena said, at the installation ceremony held at the Colombo National Hospital on November 23.

He said that presently, surgeons were using old surgical procedures such as opening the abdomen and removing the stones from kidneys with the use of the old type of lithotripter machine. But the present high-tech machine could dissolving 95 per cent of the calcium formed stones in the kidneys.

Sirisena added that the lithotripter would be able to treat around 3,000 patients per year. A patient, he said would have to spend Rs. 35,000 for this treatment at a private hospital, while the Colombo National Hospital would provide it free of charge.
