Reservoirs are almost brimful, according to Water Management Director of the Irrigation Department Janaki Meegastenna.

She said that water levels of 73 major reservoirs and 160 central reservoirs had reached their maximum capacity indicating that there would be enough water for the forthcoming Yala season.

She said that heavy rains received in the catchment areas of the Senanayake Samudraya had resulted in the water level rising up to 760,000 acre feet.

The maximum capacity of the reservoir was 770,000 acre feet, she said.

The water level of the Rambaken Oya has also risen and the Irrigation Department authorities took action to open the sluice gates.

The Water Management Director said that the water levels of reservoirs in Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura Districts too had increased.

Waters of Parakrama Samudraya, Minipe Left bank, Naachchaduuwa, Tisa Wewa, Nuwara Wewa would be released by April 10 for the farmers to commence paddy cultivation for the next season, she said.
