CA directs AG to be present in court over Colombo Port City project

By Chitra Weerarathne

The Court of Appeal yesterday directed the Attorney General to be present in court on April 29, 2015 and inform the Court of the decision the state has taken in respect of the Colombo Port City Project.

This direction was made pertaining to a Writ Application filed by Environmental Justice Private Ltd, which has complained that the respondents, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Central Environmental Authority, the Director General Coast Conservation and Connected others have not done a proper environmental assessment study prior to the commencement of the project. Hence the deep sea bed and the coral reefs could be adversely affected. The petitioner has also complained that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority has no authority to alienate land after reclaiming the sea bed.

The petition was supported by Ravindranath Dabare appearing with Nilmal Wickremasnghe.

The Bench comprised Justice Vijith Malalgoda and Justice H. C. J. Madawala.
