Karapitiya cancer unit gets timely donation

The Cyril Dharmawardana Foundation (CDF) will donate two ambulances and 50 wheel chairs to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Galle at 9 am today (26).

Chairman of the Mihindu Cultural Foundation (MCF), Kalasuri Sathischandra Edirisinghe said on Monday (23) that the Governor and Chief Minister of the Southern Province, and the Minister of Justice and Media would participate along with several film and teledrama personalities.

Edirisinghe said that the CDF had been formed in memory of veteran actor, social worker and political figure, Cyril Dharmawardana. He said that the Foundation had decided to assist cancer patients at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital following a visit to its Cancer Unit. "We were disturbed to see appalling conditions the patients were in." There was an immediate need for patient transport facility especially for the day patients who were undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other cancer related treatment. Over 80 per cent of patients who visited the Cancer hospital had to travel long distances to get treatment, he said.

Edirisinghe said that the CDF's Vision was to extend the transport fleet of other cancer units/hospitals in Sri Lanka and to offer medical assistance and advice through a team of medical professionals.

The two ambulances were purchased from funds donated to the CDF branch in Australia. The Operational cost of both ambulances is estimated to be Rs.500,000 per month. (DJ)
