Chandrasena fires salvo against opposition leader for being appendage of government

Anuradhapura District UPFA Parliamentarian S. M. Chandrasena has accused Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva of being a puppet of the government.

Addressing a press conference at Anuradhapura on Saturday (28), the former minister said that the Opposition Leader must not allow himself to be used as a cat’s paw of the government.

Chandrasena said that the incumbent Opposition leader was a close friend of his but the latter should not become what he call the tail of the government. "If the Opposition Leader is ready to play the role expected of him we will back him."

The former Minister said that a large number of SLFP members and the UPFA members were getting ready to field former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the UPFA at the forthcoming general election. "That is also the wish of those 5.8 million people who had voted for the former president at the last election. We have to respect the aspirations of our supporters and listen to their call as politicians."

"Those who organised the Bring Back Mahinda rally in Nugegoda invited us to attend it. Then they extended another invitation for us to attend the rally in Kandy. We did not attend it that too. But, the people will definitely reject us if we keep avoiding those rallies. So we attended the rally in Ratnapura. There were 28 SLFP MPs at that rally and they all have been pressured by their electorates to attend it," Chandrasena said.

"We have no intention to divide the SLFP; we want to strengthen it. Mahinda Rajapaksa is still an advisor to the SLFP. Party members and their representatives call upon the party’s top officials to nominate Rajapaksa as the next prime ministerial candidate."
