By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Health and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne during a recent inspection tour of the State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) said that a Drug Industrial Complex which could manufacture all the drugs the country needed would be established within three years.

In the open commercial market, it was difficult to introduce a price control mechanism, but action had been taken to strengthen Drug Regulatory Authority to control the drug mafia, the Health Minister said.

Dr Senaratne said the Health Ministry would purchase all the drugs from the SPMC, but some drugs that were not manufactured by the SPMC would be purchased from the private sector.

The government had a plan to set up a Drug Industrial Zone. He said he had held discussions with some foreign investors on the project and they were willing to open drug manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka, the Health Minister said.
