Democratic National alliance (DNA) leader former Army Commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka has received a treadmill from DNA MP Tiran Alles following representations made by Defence Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetty to the Trial-at-Bar hearing the ‘White Flag’ allegation case.

Sources told The Island that MP Alles had bought the exercise machine for Gen. Fonseka last February, when the Colombo District MP was held at the Navy headquarters. Sources said that authorities had declined to allow Gen. Fonseka to use the treadmill, in spite of repeated requests.

High Court Judge Mrs. Deepali Wijesundera, who is the President of the Colombo HC Trial-at-Bar on Nov. 18, said that not only Gen. Fonseka but all those held in prisons shouldn’t be inconvenienced. She stressed the importance of holding prisoners in proper conditions.

Citing medical reports, Ladduwahetty said that his client had been asked to engage in one-hour work-out daily due to injuries the former Army Chief had suffered in an LTTE suicide attack.

Sources said that MP Alles had previously donated a 14-inch television set to Gen. Fonseka. Responding to a query, sources said that Gen. Fonseka had asked for a small television set, though he could have easily obtained a bigger one.
