Gota says TNA, JVP cause ofcontinuing Emergency Regulations

by Norman Palihawadana

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa on Sunday (Nov. 28) said that Emergency Regulations couldn’t be lifted due to clandestine activities of the TNA and JVP.

Defence Secretary Rajapaksa alleged that the TNA and JVP had launched a campaign to destabilise Jaffna Peninsula, where the government was engaged in a major development effort. Responding to a query by The Island, the war veteran said that armed forces had paid a huge price to restore peace in the country, therefore politicians couldn’t be allowed to jeopardise national security according to their whims and fancies.

The LTTE rump could be waiting for an opportunity to revive its operations, the Defence Secretary said adding that the lifting of Emergency Regulations to appease a section of the Opposition could lead to a catastrophic situation. Recalling gradual easing of security restrictions in various parts of the country, including Colombo and its suburbs, the Defence Secretary said that existing Emergency Regulations would continue until a fresh review was made of the security situation.
