73 cell phones, other contraband detected in prisons since January 08

Prison Department yesterday announced that they had taken into custody 73 mobile phones, 54 SIM cards, seven sachets of heroin, and one gramme of ganja from convicted prisoners serving jail terms for different crimes they had committed.

Those had been detected by the officers during surprise raids they had been conducting since January 08 to date in the main prisons around the country.

The raids had been conducted on the directive of Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe after having come to know about the illegal activities of the inmates.

Prison Department request the general public to help them in rehabilitating the inmates by not smuggling in those contrabands into the prisons.

A mechanism is on the cards to detect those smuggling contrabands into prisons.
