President says it’s his duty to steer SLFP to victory

President Maithripala Sirisena said that it was his duty to steer the SLFP to victory at the forthcoming election.

"The SLFP which lost the Jan. 08 election should be geared to win elections again and it is my duty to see to it to ensure that the party will be able to do so. I have already commenced this work and worked hard since the day I assumed duties of the office of the President.

The President was addressing an SLFP District Representatives’ meeting held in Galle on Saturday.

He said that he had made sacrifices to strengthen the government and the SLFP during the past three months. The party constitution had been amended to facilitate former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Kumaratunga to work with other seniors of the party again for the victory of the SLFP. Time had come for all senior leaders of the party to come on a single stage and that would boost the morale of the party’s rank and file and attract outsiders to the party to increase its membership.

President Sirisena said that the party members should understand why the SLFP had lost the Jan. 08 election. The time had come for the SLFP to regain the trust of all communities, he said.

Among those present were General Secretary of the SLFP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Minister Piyasena Gamage, Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva, MPs Susil Premjayantha, AHM Fowzie, Nishantha Mutuhettigama, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody and a large number of SLFP members of the Galle and Matara Districts.
