Sources close to ex-minister say they are out to put him behind bars before next Friday’s rally in Kurunegala

Former Internal Trade and Cooperatives Minister and Kurunegala District MP Johnston Fernando has been summoned to Financial Crimes Investigation Division tomorrow (05) morning.

He has been summoned to record a statement for allegedly not paying five million rupees for goods he had obtained from the Lanka Sathosa when he was the minister, sources said.

Sources close to former Minister said that they had receipts to prove that the payments had been made. The objective was to put former Minister Fernando behind bars to disrupt organising of the forthcoming rally to be held at Kurunegala town in support of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa next Friday (08), they said.

Sources said that the charges had been pressed at the behest of a powerful UNP politician in the same district.

MP Fernando was summoned before the bribery commission sometimes back and he submitted a declaration of his assets.
