Annual conference of Toastmasters International (TI) District 82 titled ‘Ovation 2015’ will be held on May 22 at the BMICH. District 82 comprises Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu.

This was announced at a media briefing held at Sri Lanka Foundation Institution late last week.

Nearly 600 participants are expected to attend with the Indian participation estimated at 100.

District governor (DG) of District 82 Yusuf Jeewanjee, briefed the media about the TI and its activities.

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organisation that teaches communication skills and leadership skills through a global network of partner clubs.

The DG said the aim of the organization was to deliver the afore mentioned skills in an entertaining manner in which especially the public speaking skills were not tested in a discouraging manner but in an encouraging manner by which the member would be pointed out his or her strengths and weaknesses which would help them develop their potential and become strong and outstanding personalities in society.

Toastmasters were organised into over 90 Districts (covering global regions) which have divisions which in turn comprise individual clubs, he said.

Jeewanjee noted that only nine clubs existed in 2004 but by the end of 2014 they had grown to 95 clubs in Sri Lanka which itself reflected the tendency of the society to join their highly successful movement.

"The network of clubs has grown from Colombo centric group to groups in Jaffna, Kandy, Matara, Galle etc. which have paved a path for new members from all parts of the country to join our movement", Lieutenant D.G. Marketing Sudash Liyanage said.

Dananjaya Hettiarachchi won the Toastmasters Championship for public Speaking at the annual conference of TI held in Kuala Lampur last year (2014) which was a major breakthrough for Sri Lanka in the globe of toastmasters since he was the first Asian to win this prestigious title, past D.G. Zameen M Saleem said.

Also Sri Lanka’s former District Governor Arunasalam Balraj is the Second Vice president of TI who will be elected as the president of TI in two years’ time.

Such milestones have brought great advantages to Sri Lanka and hence they invited the youth of the nation to join the organization and develop their skills and compete with the world.

Ovation 2015 will commence with a grand opening ceremony at the BMICH on 22nd May and will be chaired by Ajantha Jayawardena.

On May 23 and 24 they will hold the educational sessions and competitions at Mt. Lavinia Hotel.
