Siripala says next election under new electoral system

The SLFP yesterday said the 20th Amendment to the Constitution should be passed before the dissolution of Parliament and the next general election should be held under the new electoral system.

Addressing the media at party headquarters on Darley Road, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said the government could not have passed the 19th Amendment if the opposition had opposed it.

Silva said that the UNP was out to weaken the SLFP by arresting its MPs but such tactics wouldn’s work.

The former minister said the government had not yet presented the inquiry report on the Central Bank Governor over the bond scam to Parliament as promised.

Silva said they also opposed the dissolution of local government bodies and the appointing of special commissioners to run them until LG polls.

"The next local government elections will be held under the new electoral system and delimitation process has not yet been completed," Silva said, adding that they had asked the government to extend the term of local government bodies by one year until the delimitation process was over.

SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Colombo District MP Thilanga Sumathipala were also present at the media conference.
