The All Ceylon Health Service Union (ACHSU), the JVP trade union arm, in the government health sector staged a protest march and a demonstration outside the Health Ministry yesterday morning making 10 demands inclusive of the rectification of salary anomalies.

The union has members from over 30 grades and including health service assistants, overseers, ward clerks and lab assistants. It also staged a strike at the National Hospital parallel to the demonstration.

Director of the National Hospital, Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that services had been mildly disrupted as nearly 50 per cent of the minor employees had walked out.  The situation had returned to normal in the evening, he said.

President of ACHSU, Samantha Koralearachchi said that their demands also include a Rs. 3,000 special allowance to all minor employees, a proper recruitment procedure, allocation of work according to service minutes and the rectification of salary anomalies.

Koralearachchi accused the Health Ministry of having dragged its feet over the issue for over 120 days.
