Justice Minister: Medical equipment needed by Sajin not brought to prison hospital

By Saman Indrajith

Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapakshe told Parliament yesterday that UPFA MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena had been given freedom to attend Parliamentary sittings in keeping with the latter’s parliamentary privileges.

The Minister said Gunawardena was currently in the Welikada Prison hospital and though officials in charge had permitted him to attend Parliament he had not done so.

"MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena has requested permission to attend Parliamentary sitting on Wednesday  (20), Thursday and Friday. He has not asked to attend Parliament on Tuesday (19) as the Opposition claimed. Furthermore, if he is not permitted to leave the hospital ward of the prison it is most likely because the medical officer in charge would have denied him freedom to travel in view of his medical condition."

The Justice Minister said it was the duty of the medical officers in the prison hospital ward to ensure the health and wellbeing of prisoners warded there for treatment. Although prison officials had given permission for the special medical equipment needed by the MP for his unique respiratory condition to be provided to him within the prison premises, no family member of the Parliamentarian had brought it.
