Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake yesterday told Parliament that he had never influenced lending processes of Lankaputhra Bank or any other bank contrary to claims by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Making a ministerial statement, Minister Karunanayake said: "My attention is drawn to a recent statement made by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa with regard to Lankaputhra Development Bank. I assumed the Finance Minister portfolio on Jan 12, 2015. Among the institutions that come under the purview of my ministry is the Lankaputhra Development Bank. Former President Rajapaksa making a public statement said that I had abused my powers as the minister of finance to get the Lankaputhra Bank to provide loans facilities irrespective of the securities and guarantees promised by the loan applicants. He further said that I had sent a list of names of loan applicants to the bank and instructed that those loans be granted.

"The statement made by the former President was wrong and misleading the public.

I have never influenced the lending process of any bank including the Lankaputhra Development Bank.

"Before we came to power the Finance Minister was former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He had got the bank to issue credit on forged deeds and counterfeit gems. During the period from 2006-2014 the Lankaputhra Bank had issued loans amounting to 1132.76 million rupees on political instructions.

"The Lankaputhra Development Bank now has handed over all the documentary evidence pertaining to such dubious loans to the Financial Crimes Investigations Division so that people would come to know the truth once the investigations are over.

"During my political career of the past 21 years I have become the subject of many similar allegations," the Minister said.
