City wide blackout averted with alternative arrangement

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) engineers Wednesday evening managed to overcome an unusual technical problem in a transformer, a top official said.

CEB Chairman, Anura Wijepala told The Island yesterday that they were worried that the transformer would explode due to excessive heat.

He added that such incidents were extremely rare but since they didn’t have spare transformers it was cause for grave concern and if the unforeseen had happened vital areas of Colombo would have been without power.

On Wednesday, power interruption experienced in most parts of the Colombo City was due to a very serious problem in the system, a senior engineer said.

Consumers continued to experience power interruptions in most parts of Colombo 3, 4, 6, and 7 till Wednesday evening.

A senior CEB engineer told The Island that engineers were yet to find out the cause of the unusual fault in a transformer at Havelock Road Sub Station.

The transformer’s temperature is increasing rapidly.
