Govt. under pressure to privatise loss making ventures – Kiriella

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Plantation Minister and Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella yesterday claimed the government was under pressure to privatise many state-sector business undertakings that were running at a loss. He made this statement at the Opening Ceremony of a website at the BCC (Pvt) Ltd. yesterday.

Minister Krirella said it was the people who were pressurizing the government to privatise the unproductive state-sector organisations.

The 19th Amendment stipulated that even if the President appointed either CJ or IGP at his discretion, a parliamentary Committee headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe had been vested with powers to halt the appointment. But, the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had appointed a CJ arbitrarily and nobody had power to either object or halt it. It was the salient feature of the 19th Amendment, the Kandy District MP said.

Minister Kiriella said that in accordance with the provisions of the 19th Amendment the judiciary and police could never be politically interfered with. "I am confident that in the next parliamentary election the UNP will win with a steam-roller majority.
