Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Chrishanthe de Silva has suspended the services of four soldiers, involved in a fatal accident at Jayanthipura, Pollonnaruwa, in which a man and his wife were killed on the spot.

Army Spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera told The Island that the commander had suspended the suspects with immediate effect without pay.

The fatal accident occurred on the night of May 21 on the Maradankadawala-Batticaloa main road in the Polonnaruwa police area.

"An army truck with four soldiers collided with a car killing two persons on the spot while it was returning after some duty commitments," he said.

"The Commander directed the Provost Marshal Brigadier Gamini Sirisena of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police and Director Legal Colonel Edward Jayasinghe to conduct immediate investigations after which the four soldiers are to be arraigned before a Court Martial under the Judge Advocate General of the Army Brigadier Ranjith Rajapathirana."

The Commander has also instructed the Military Police to fully cooperate with the Police in the latter’s civil investigation, the Brigadier said.

Police earlier told The Island on that day the army truck had been driven by a drunken soldier.  The victims had been on their way home with their two sons and a nephew after attending a religious ceremony.

The victims’ son, who had driven the car at the time of the accident, told the police that the army truck had been driven recklessly on the wrong side of the road.

The deceased were D. M. Anil Munasinghe and K. A. W. Tamara Malkanthi of No. 363, Track 05, Jayanthipura.
