The UNP and SLFP have agreed to work together for two years after the next general election, Housing and Samurdhi Minister Sajith Premadasa said recently.

Addressing a ceremony to mark the resumption of providing free mid day meals to 15 schools in Hambantota District at the Theriputta Primary School in Ambalantota, the minister said incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe would continue to rule the country even after the upcoming general election. "We will rebuild this country within next two years," he said.

Minister Premadasa said that the SLFP was a major political force consisting of five major forces namely Sangha, Guru, Veda, Govi and Kamkaru (Bhikkhus, teachers, doctors, farmers and workers).

"That was when SWRD Bandaranaike formed the party. Those five forces known as Pancha Maha Balavegaya had ensured the victory of the SLFP and the governments led by that party had in return looked after the interests of those forces which helped them to come to power. But, during the recent times, the major forces that propped the SLFP up were not the Pancha Maha Balawegaya but drug dealers, casino owners, rapists, child abusers, bribe takers, fraudsters, robbers, and murderers. Those dregs of society held the power in party and the governments they formed looked after their interests only. The SLFP had been compelled to do as those anti-social elements said, Premadasa said.

"That is why the real SLFP members have rallied behind President Maithripala Sirisena. It is the duty of President Sirisena as the leader of the SLFP to uphold its values and get rid of anti-social elements within the party and revive the Pancha Maha Balavegaya," Minister Premadasa added.
