Sajin moves court seeking Rs. 500M from police

‘Illegal arrest and detention’:

Sajin D. Vaas Gunewardane, UPFA MP for Galle yesterday filed a fundamental violation application, challenging his arrest and subsequent detention by the CID. He has claimed Rs. 500 million in damages. He is suspected of misappropriation of 22 vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat.

The petition claims that he duly returned the vehicles and hence no offence was committed.

The respondents are Inspector Dissanayake and the Officer-in-Charge of the Commercial Crimes Investigation Division, both of the CID.

The petitioner was remanded by the Fort Magistrate on an application made by the CID.

The petitioner has claimed an illegal arrest and illegal detention, in violation of his personal liberty. He wants the court to order the respondents of release him from illegal custody and to declare the violation of his fundamental rights.
