Opposition benches deserted because of Matara rally

Leader of the House and Plantations Minister Lakshman Kiriella said that there were no opposition members in Parliament yesterday as everybody had gone to Matara to attend bring-back-Mahinda rally.

"There is no Opposition Leader, no opposition MPs. Everybody has gone to Matara," he said.

When Minister said so referring to the empty rows of seats on the opposition side, the presiding member Deputy Chairman of Committees C. Murugessu said that there was one opposition MP present pointing to MP DEW Gunasekera.

At this point the Foreign Minister told MP Gunasekera: "You are from Matara. I am also from Matara. We from Matara are here while others from here have gone to Matara."

When the House commenced sittings and oral question session was skipped over without MPs to raise questions. When the responses were being tabled, the chair called for Matara District MP Buddhika Pathirana to present private members’ motions as scheduled in the Order Paper. From the item No 1 to 130 the motions were to be presented by MP Pathirana. The first three motions were listed to be taken for debate yesterday. Leader of the House Plantations Minister Kiriella said that private members’ motions would be moved and item No 132, an order under the Ocean University of Sri Lanka Act would be presented. Accordingly, that order was passed. Thereafter, the House adjourned sittings till 23rd of this month. Thereafter, a motion was moved at the time of adjournment by MP Aslem Mohamed on Rohingya Muslims for debate which continued till 3.15 pm.
