Beach Wadiya gutted

The internationally famed Beach Wadiya restaurant in Wellawatte was destroyed in a fast spreading fire in the early hours of yesterday morning, possibly fanned by blowing from the sea.

The over 40-year-old landmark restaurant which has hosted the likes of Princess Anne and Richard Branson was earlier damaged and rebuilt from scratch following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

The cause of yesterday's fire is unknown, and police Scene of Crime squad are investigating the various possibilities while the Government Analyst is expected to conduct a probe to find out what triggered the fire which reduced the reception and bar areas of the restaurant reduced to cinders.

Onlookers said an electrical short circuit was a possibility though police ruled out nothing.

A valuable collection of guest books which had testimonials from important guests such as the U.S. Under Secretary of State Nisha Bishwal, who was here early this year and other notable sportsmen, actors, etc., of global renown, was consumed by the fire.
