The Udawala police have arrested two suspects aged 18 and 21 in connection with the killing of a schoolboy (16), who was found lying with his throat slit in a shrub jungle adjacent to his school in that police area.

One of the suspects taken into custody with trishaw is alleged to have killed the schoolboy as he wanted to become the boyfriend of the victim’s girlfriend, ASP Gunasekara said.

The victim, Hasitha Eranjana Lakshan, a Grade Eleven student of the Kolombage Ara Maha Vidyalaya, had been asked by the suspect to come along with him in his trishaw to discuss cordially the matter regarding the girlfriend.

The suspect instead of any friendly discussion had slit the throat of the victim and taken the body to the place where the body was found with the help of the other suspect, investigations had revealed, he said.

The Police spokesman said Police, Media, Parents and religious leaders should accept part of the responsibility for crimes of that nature as it showed the deterioration of morality and spiritual well-being of persons.

A decent society should take the responsibility of reforming at least other youth who had corrupted thinking of that manner, he remarked.

A shocking crime of that nature should not happen again and the society with the police should take tangible action to prevent such crimes in future, the ASP added.

The knife used to slit the throat of the victim has been recovered. The suspects were to be produced before the Embilipitiya Magistrate yesterday.

The victim had left home saying he wanted to attend a private tuition class, police said. His parents had alerted the police when he did not return.

A suspect together with his trishaw had been taken into custody as it contained a patch of blood and some chilli powder in it.
