Forest officers attached to the Walasmulla range in the Hambantota District have detected a lorry load of teak transported to Moratuwa without a licence.

The smugglers had transported 162 logs of teak inside a lorry ostensibly transporting used plastic bottles, Range Forest Officer Sumith Swaris told The Island.

He said that acting on a tip-off, they had intercepted the vehicle in the Koholana area on the Walasmulla–Middeniya road. The timber was worth Rs. 228,204.63.

Walasmulla Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga released the two suspects after fining them  Rs. 20,000 each. They are Kudapala Vidanage Ishan (32) and Angappulige Ruwan Suranga (31), both residents of Middeniya.

Swaris said the load of teak had been confiscated and the vehicle released on a Rs. 200,000 bond until the investigations regarding the lorry were over.

The raid was conducted by Range Forest Officer Sumith Swaris, Beat Forest Officer B. C. Bibulevitharana, Beat Forest Officer D. Hettiarachchi, Field Assistants W. D. Kapila Kumara, D. C. L. Jayakody, S. T. Gunasinghe and Deshan Chinthaka.
