Hakeem wants gazette notification on 20A withdrawn

By Cyril Wimalasurendre

KANDY – Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader and Minister of Urban Development Rauf Hakeem yesterday (19) urged the government to withdraw the gazette notification on the 20th Amendment forthwith.

Addressing the media in Kandy after attending a workshop on the development plans of the City, Minister Hakeem claimed that the provisions in the gazette notification would result in the minority political parties being wiped out without representation in Parliament.

If the government failed to withdraw the gazette notification at the earliest, minority political parties would continue to protest within and outside Parliament, Hakeem warned.

He said several parties including the SLMC and the JVP breakaway group Frontline Socialist Party had met and decided to call for the withdrawal of the gazette notification at issue.

According to the notification only the two major political parties would survive while smaller groups would be lost forever, the SLMC leader claimed.
