Excise busts group of foreign liquor, cigarette smugglers

Officers of the Crime Division of the Excise Department recently nabbed three suspects at the Bandaranaike International Airport arrival lounge for attempting to smuggle in 39 bottles of premium brands of foreign liquor and 14 cartons of cigarettes. They had arrived in an early morning flight from Singapore.


Excise Department spokesman Jayantha de Silva said the suspects had hidden the bottles of liquor and the cigarettes among spare parts, he said.


The market value of the liquor and cigarettes were around Rs. 500,000.


When the excise men checked their passports it was revealed that they were frequent travellers and the liquor and fags had been purchased in Singapore.


The suspects are residents of Chilaw, Wattala and Tangalle.


The suspect who had undeclared cigarettes in his possession would be produced before the Commissioner General of Excise, while those who had bottles of liquor in their possession would be produced before the Negombo Magistrate, the Excise spokesman said.
