Car broker caught extorting money

KANDY – Kandy Chief Magistrate A. M. A. Wasanthakumara remanded till July 09 a car broker produced by the Peradeniya police for allegedly extorting Rs. 300,000 from a postmaster and a female employee of his institution while they were in a van at Gannoruwa near Peradeniya.


Suspect, Yakdehige Indika Suraweera, was arrested by the police following a complaint by the postmaster that the suspect posed as a policeman in civvies and took photographs with his cellular phone and threatened to take the couple to the police stations and prosecute them. The extortionist demanded Rs. 300,000 from the victims to drop the case.


The complainant and his paramour had in their possession only Rs. 220,000 and paid that amount. Later the suspect repeatedly telephoned the victim, demanding the balance Rs. 80,000.


The complainant informed the police last Sunday (28) and the police arrested the con-man in the act of accepting the balance money.


Police said the money had been recovered from the suspect.
