A person who tried to smuggle in ten sachets of heroin, a mobile phone and a phone charger into the Galle Prison on Esala Full Moon Poya Day Wednesday was nabbed.

The suspect had brought in the items hidden inside a packet of milk powder and intended to give them to one of his friends held in the prison remand, prison sources said.

They said the suspect had managed to bring in the milk packet into the prison premises but failed to pass it on to his inmate friend detained over his alleged involvement in a brawl.

Later, the smuggler sought the assistance of another prisoner serving in the prison canteen to pass the parcel to his inmate friend. As the latter was opposed to the idea, the suspect dumped the milk packet containing heroin and mobile phone with a charger into a trash bin and tried to flee but prison authorities nabbed him.

The suspect is a resident of Baddegama area. He was handed over to Galle Police for further investigations by Chief Jailer V. R. Prabhath on the instructions of Galle Acting Superintendent Prisons C. Liyanage.

Galle police are conducting further investigations.
