Tremor attributed to piling work in building site

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) yesterday said that a minor tremor felt in the Bambalapitiya area on Wednesday evening had been caused by the piling work in a nearby building construction site.

DMC Deputy Director and Media Spokesman Sarath Lal Kumara told The Island that no damages had been reported due to vibrations.

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) had confirmed that minor vibrations felt by residents in Bambalapitiya were due to development projects in the area, he said.

The Deputy Director said the bureau had not yet identified as to which building site produced the minor tremor.

It was not clear exactly in which area the minor tremor had been felt as some said it was in Bambalapitiya and some others said it was felt in Kollupitiya, too, Sarath Kumara added.

Therefore, the GSMB would further investigate the matter, Lal Kumara said.

However, DMC asked the public not to panic.
