Transfer lists: Docs to take up political interference with Polls Chief, health bigwigs

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday said that it would complain to the Elections Commissioner and the Director General Health Services (DGHS) against the distortion of the doctors transfer lists by the Health Ministry.

GMOA Spokesman Dr. Naveen Soysa said the lists had been made according to the needs and vacancies in hospitals in the country. However, the transfer lists and post intern appointments had been interfered with for political reasons. That would affect the services of majority hospitals in the country, especially in the Northern, Eastern, North Central, and Uva Provinces, he said.

Dr. Soysa said the GMOA which prepared the transfer lists in consultation with Health Ministry officials would be unable to assign doctors to man units in certain hospitals in those provinces. "We have to warn the Health Ministry beforehand that services provided by these units in these hospitals will have to be either scaled down or stopped."

The GMOA spokesman said that the matter would have to be discussed further with its decision making body before a final decision was taken.

The GMOA transfer boards met yesterday to discuss the issue which had arisen following the alleged political interference with transfer lists, he said.
