An agreement was signed by Health Secretary Dr D.M.R.B. Dissanayake and Director (Special Projects) Senok Trade Combine (Pvt) Ltd, O.J.S. Perera to recommence building the Galle Karapitiya Maternal Hospital. Health Minister, Dr Rajitha Senaratne, Deputy Director General (Dental Services) Dr J.M.W. Jayasundara Bandara, Deputy Operations Chief, German Embassy, Dr Mickael Dohmen and Group Finance Director, Senok Trade Combine (Pvt) Ltd, Pancherine Dias were also present.

The Health Ministry yesterday said it had entered into an agreement with a local special projects firm to recommence construction work on the Karapitiya Maternity Hospital in Galle.

Spokesperson for the Health Ministry, S.M.L.P. Kumari said the German Government had provided Rs. 5000 million to recommence construction work of the Maternity Hospital at Karapitiya.

The initial construction of the Hospital had commenced in 2005 under a project managed by former Chancellor Helmut Kohl Foundation following the December 26, 2004 tsunami when the Mahamodara Teaching Hospital had been severely affected. Kohl had been holidaying in the south when the devastating tsunami struck, killing more than 30,000 Lankans alone. The hospital was to be shifted to Karapitiya. The Sri Lankan government had provided the land at the time.

Explaining, Kumari said that construction work had come to a halt after laying the Foundation in 2008. The German based KfW Bank (Reconstruction Credit Institute) signed an agreement with the Finance Ministry in 2012 to provide a soft loan to enable the Sri Lankan government to complete the hospital. However a large amount of time was taken in coming to an agreement about the final plan for the building and the contract agreement which resulted in further delay.  Kumari said Health Minister, Dr Rajitha Senaratne had intervened, stressing the need of the hospital for the South of Sri Lanka and expedited the process. The Contract agreement was signed yesterday morning between Health Secretary, Dr D.M.R.B. Dissanayake and Senok Trade Combine (Pvt) Ltd. (DJ)
