Four gunmen opened fire at a political event attended by a group of UNP supporters campaigning for Colombo District candidate and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake near St. Benedict’s College on Bloemendhal road at 11.30 am wounding 13 persons and one of them fatally.

Forty six-year-old Siththi Maheema succumbed to her injuries after being admitted to the National Hospital.

State Minister for Children’s Affairs and Colombo District UNP candidate Rosy Senanayake told The Island that Maheema,

a resident of Madampitiya had been a longstanding party supporter. Attackers had fired from two black cars, Senanayake said, calling for a comprehensive police investigation.

Eyewitness R. Bandara told The Island that about 300 persons had been walking towards the Sugathadasa Indoor stadium from the direction of Mattakuliya when four persons stepped out of a black car and opened fire.

According to him, UNPers had been distributing leaflets at the time of the incident.

"We stopped a lorry and asked the driver to take the wounded to hospital," Bandara said.

National Hospital sources said that five persons had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake alleged that those who couldn’t stomach the UNP’s victory were responsible for the attack. "We’ll go ahead with the campaign." Minister Karunanayake had been leading a separate group of supporters in the same area at the time of the attack.

The police said that the attackers had targeted two persons identified as Sampath and Sanka who were among the crowd.
