Polls campaign picks up steam as it enters last two week stretch

Main political parties have intensified their propaganda activities as the election campaigning has entered its last two weeks.

The UNP had instructed its candidates and activists to hold pocket meetings in all electorates in addition to main rallies in the cities, party sources said. The party would continue its main rallies at the district level.

The UPFA has instructed its candidates and electoral organisers to increase the number of canvassing rounds and to distribute copies of its manifesto and party’s vision for future of Sri Lanka to each and every house. They have also been instructed to hold pocket meetings in addition to previously scheduled rallies.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Bimal Ratnayake and Vijitha Herath are scheduled to address a public rally at 3.30 pm today in Negombo, while party’s General Secretary Tilvin Silva is scheduled to attend a meeting scheduled to be held at Manel Reception Hall in Rikillagaskada in Nuwara Eliya at 10.00 am. Silva will also address an election rally at 3.00 pm in Badulla while Sunil Handunnetti is scheduled to address three meetings scheduled to be held at Weligama (5.00 pm), Pelena (7.00 pm) and Horagoda (8.00 pm) in the Matara District today.

The JVP leader will address three meetings at Thalagaha (3.00 pm) Thanipolgaha (5.00 pm) and Kurunduwatte in Gintota (6.00 pm)  and in Galle tomorrow. In the Gampaha District Vijitha Herath will address meetings the same day at Gamapaha Sudeshi Hall (10 am), at Udupila Junction (4.00pm) and at Hiripitiya (6.00 pm), while Bimal Ratnayake will speak at Kelaniya (2.00 pm).

In the Ratnapura District K.D. Lalkantha will speak tomorrow at Rakwana (10 am)  at Kuruwita (2.00 pm  and at  Eheliyagoda (4.00 pm).  On the same day Sunil Handunetti will address three meetings, one at Bopitiya at 5.00 pm, 6.30 pm at Mankada and 8.00 pm at Welipenna in Kalutara District, while Namal Karunaratne is scheduled to speak at two meetings, one at 3.00 pm in Navagattegama and another 6.00 pm at Konkadawala in Puttalam District.
