Nine violations during postal voting

There were nine incidents of election law violations during postal voting by police officers and government teachers, the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said.


CMEV alleged that Officer-in-Charge of Nilaveli Police station, N. P. F. Bandara had allowed the government servants to cast their votes without producing their National Identity Cards (NIC). 


"UNP candidate for Polonnaruwa District Aluthgamage Gamini Nanda Kumara entered the postal voting centre at the Zonal Education Office, Manampitiya and met teachers at around 10.05 am.  The Democratic Party Candidate for Galle with his supporters arrived at a polling centre, Sangamitta Girls’ School and distributed leaflets. 


"Two huge cut-outs of UNP candidate for Badulla, Harin Fernando were displayed near Welimada Zonal Education office, a postal polling centre, where an illegal party office set up by him or his supporters. UPFA candidate, Gunasingham for Jaffna parked a vehicle pasted with his posters near the Kopai Police Station for about twenty minutes and also UNP Jaffna


District candidate S. Kulendiraja with his posters pasted on a vehicle was parked near another polling centre in Jaffna, Nothern Province Educational Department at around 10.30 a.m.


"Another incident in Vanni, UNP/UNF Jaffna District candidate Rishad Bathiudeen’s poster had been pasted at the polling centre, Zonal Educational Office Mandai. ACMC supporters distributed notices and images of ACMC candidate for Digamadulla, Shiraz Meerasahib and Rishad Bathuideen at Kalmunai Zonal Education Department, a postal polling centre."


They also said, "A significant number of party offices have been attacked between July 20 and August 02. There were 52 such election offences reported and majority of which added up to 15 have occurred in the Gampaha district. Out of the total incidents, 38 have occurred against United National Front (UNF), while five have occurred against United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)."
