The JVP yesterday accused the UNP of using underworld gangs in its election campaign.

Addressing a press conference at the JVP head office in Battaramulla, JVP Matara District Candidate and former MP Sunil Hadunnetti said that the two main political parties, UNP and UPFA were now employing the old methods the majority of people had voted for a change at the last presidential election.

Citing the recent murders in Kotahena and Wattala, he alleged that the underworld gangs created by the former UPFA government were now being given protection under the Yahapalana government.

Hadunnetti accused the government ministers of violating election laws by misusing state property and abusing their powers for campaigning.

He also criticizsed the UNP’s election manifesto as another ‘Regaining Sri Lanka- a seemingly neo-liberal development plan’ proposed by UNP leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in 2002.

Wickremesinghe was once again trying to establish authorities in the country to run the economy and to privatise state institutions, Hadunnetti added.
