JVP trade union wing leader and Western Provincial Council member K. D. Lalkantha’s resignation from the Provincial Council was a party decision taken before the August 17 general election, JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath said yesterday.

He said Lalkantha had tendered his resignation letter to the Provincial Council on August 10 according to a party decision.

Lalkantha contested the general election from the Colombo District unsuccessfully. Only JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was elected to Parliament from the Colombo District.

"Some people tried to make an issue with Lalkantha’s resignation, but he resigned from the Provincial Council to engage in national level politics," Herath said, adding that he had a national role to play as the JVP’s trade union wing leader.

The propaganda secretary also denied the rumours that preferential votes obtained by Lalkantha had been transferred to party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the counting stage.

When contacted for comment, former Minister Lalkantha said he had resigned two weeks back. He said he was wondering why it had become an issue all of a sudden.

Lalkantha said that several tasks had been assigned to him by the party as he handled the trade union sector and that was the reason why he had resigned from the Provincial Council.
