JVP bypasses Lalkantha, appoints Bimal NL MP

By Dasun Edirisinghe

The JVP yesterday named their Gamapaha District defeated candidate Bimal Ratnayake for the national list post that fell vacant due to the resignation of its NL parliamentarian Sarathchandra Mayadunne on Thursday.

Addressing the media at the party headquarters, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that they named former Auditor General Mayadunne to one of their national list slots, but he had resigned due to personal reasons after making a special statement in Parliament on Thursday.

He said although Ratnayake had been defeated at the general election on August 17 from the Gamapaha District, his presence in Parliament was vital for the people of the country.

Ratnayake first elected to Parliament in 2000 from the Kurunegala was re-elected at the 2004 general election from the same district. He was also the head of the Socialist Youth Union and was appointed the party’s National Organiser in 2014.

Asked why they hadn’t appointed JVP trade union wing leader K. D. Lalkantha for the vacancy as speculated in political circles, Dissanayake said that the JVP was not like other parties and it abided by its politburo’s decision.

He said Lalkantha had resigned from the Western Provincial Council to work in the trade union field at the national level and the party had assigned another task to him.

Dissanayake said Lalkantha had been fielded at the Provincial Council election due to the political situation at the time.

JVP National List MP Sunil Handunnetti also attended the media conference.
