Mahesh Perera and Wasantha Rathnapala beat a Chinese Taipei duo to record Sri Lanka’s first victory in a Group ‘G’ first round match of the volleyball championship of the 2nd Asian Beach Games at Muscat, Oman yesterday.
Although Chinese Taipei pair did not have much international experience they managed to give a good fight to the Sri Lankan pair who used their experience later to record a 2-1 victory.
After recording a close 23-21 victory in the first set, Sri Lanka lost to their opponents, 21-17, in the second due to unproductive tactics. Though they were behind five points in the second set, they fought back to tie scores at 17-17. But the pair was unable to keep up the momentum again and lost it in the end.
In the decisive third set, Sri Lanka were behind their opponents, 6-8, at one stage but they fought back to record a thrilling 17-15 victory over Chinese Taipei registering first victory in the Asian Beach Games.
Mahesh was good at ‘digging’ but was not impressive in his attacks yesterday and that cost Sri Lanka duo highly in their failed second set.
