Landslide buries five houses

Five bodies of victims of landslides were found yesterday by the Kotmale police at Lilly’s Land in Vedamulla.

Three other persons injured in the landslide have been admitted Kotmale Hospital and one of them was transferred to the ICU of Gampola Teaching Hospital.

Five houses were buried in the tragedy and the police are looking for more survivors.

Sub Inspector Lakshman Abeyratne said special teams had been deployed to search for the missing victims.

The scene of the landslide was about 10 km away from the Kotmale police station and rescue teams had to reach the scene moving across streams and waterways as the connecting roads were covered with soil and mud washed down by heavy rains, the police said.

Part of a hillock 200-metre wide had fallen on the houses, the police said. Three hundred persons displaced are being sheltered at the Ramboda Hindu College.

The deceased areLegamani (48),Tingo Lechchmi(67), Suga (28),Bhoomi (7) and Sayani (10).

Rescue operations are conducted by the Nuwara Eliya police and the army with the assistance of the residents under the supervision of Nuwara-Eliya SSP Edmund Mahinda.
